Liverpool came from behind to defeat Newcastle United 4-1 on matchday of the 2025/26 Premier League season at Anfield on Saturday.
In the first half, Barnes' free-kick hit the post, Gordon scored with a follow-up shot, and Ekitike scored twice. In the second half, Wirtz scored with a powerful shot. In a crucial moment, Konaté scored on a rebound. Ultimately, Liverpool secured a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United. After this round of matches, the Reds, back on winning ways, temporarily rise to 5th place in the league table with 39 points; the Magpies, on the other hand, temporarily drop to 10th with 33 points.
First Half
In the 26th minute, Newcastle United had a free-kick opportunity. Lewis Hall took the tactical free-kick. After Harvey Barnes took over, he strucked the ball from with his right foot outside the penalty area, but his over unfortunately hit the right post and bounced out. The Magpies missed a golden opportunity to break the deadlock first!
10 minutes later, Joe Willock passes horizontally from the left wing. His pass was initially blocked and cleared off not far away by Alexis Mac Allister. Anthony Gordon quickly followed up and picking up the loose ball volleyed the ball into the bottom left corner of the net with a right-footed follow-up shot from the right side of the box. After beating the offside trap, Ekitike quickly followed up and got the ball, dribbled past Dan Burn into the right side of the box before volleying with his right foot, but his shot went wide of the left side of the post.
8 minutes later, Newcastle United earned a free kick. Kieran Trippier took the free kick by crossing it into the box from outside the penalty area. Malik Thiaw headed the ball across. Barnes quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, volleyed with his left foot from the center of the box, but his shot was saved by Alisson.
In the 67th minute, Mohamed Salah passes horizontally from the right side of the box. Florian Wirtz quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass volleyed the ball into the bottom left corner of the net with his right foot, extending Liverpool's lead to 3-1! This is the Germany international wonderkid's sixth goal in his last 10 matches!
In the third minute of stoppage time, Liverpool won a deadly corner opportunity. Szoboszlai took the corner by crossing it into the box. His pass was initially saved and cleared off not far away by Nick Pope. Ibrahima Konaté quickly followed up and after picking up the loose ball, strucke the ballinto the bottom left corner of the net with a right-footed follow-up shot, sealing a 4-1 victory for Liverpool! After scoring, Konaté tearfully dedicated the honour to his recently deceased father!
When the final whsitle is blown, Liverpool demolished Newcastle United with a 4-1 comeback victory against Newcastle United, returning to winning ways in a strong fashion.
