Vieirinha, a 39-year-old former Portuguese international and current PAOK defender, released a video announcing his retirement after the end of this season. This weekend's Greek Super League final against AEK Athens will also be his farewell match in his career.
"I've always feared this day would come," Vieirinha said in the video. "When you grow up playing football, the thought of stopping what you love is enough to make you tremble."
"After a journey filled with memories, joy, trophies and pain, it's time to listen to my body. It's time to say goodbye to football."
Vieirinha came from the Porto youth training and made his official debut on loan for Marco in August 2005. He then played for Porto, Lexon, PAOK and Wolfsburg, and returned to PAOK in August 2017.
To date, Vieirinha has made 553 appearances at the club level, including 9 Champions League games, 27 Europa League games, 17 UEFA Cup games, 125 Bundesliga games, 29 Portuguese Super League games and 215 Greek Super League games. He has scored 66 goals and made 68 assists, winning 1 Portuguese Super League title, 2 Portuguese Super Cup titles, 1 Greek Super League title, 3 Greek Cup titles, 1 German Cup title and 1 German Super Cup title.
As for the national team, Vieirinha has played for Portugal since March 2013, and has played only 25 times so far, scoring 1 goal and providing 1 assist. He has participated in 1 World Cup (2014) and 1 European Cup (2016), and won the European Cup with the team in 2016.
