ESPN reporter Tim Bontemps stated clearly on Monday's episode of "The Hoop Collective" that the Dallas Mavericks face significant challenges in attempting to trade for Anthony Davis. Due to factors such as age, his substantial salary, and player options, most teams in the league are cautious about acquiring Davis.
“It’s widely believed that trading Anthony Davis would inevitably yield three first-round picks, two pick swaps, two young players, and various other assets. I’m not saying this won’t happen, but if you talk to people inside the league, you’ll find that very few teams are willing to take on a player who will be 35 years old in the final year of his contract, earning a whopping $62.8 million annually, especially considering the high likelihood that he will exercise his player option,” Bontemps stated bluntly. Because Davis is highly likely to exercise his $62.8 million player option for the 2027/28 season, his potential destinations will inevitably face significant salary cap pressure.
"The key is whether Dallas can find a team willing to take on Davis' contract," Bontemps concluded. "If they can, then the next step is to consider: what assets are they willing to offer in addition to covering his salary?"
However, Davis's top priority right now is to return to play as soon as possible and stay healthy. Plagued by severe adductor and calf injuries, he only played 14 of the 48 regular-season games for the Mavericks, averaging 20.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game.
