As Arsenal prepare for a crucial second leg of their League Cup semi-final against Chelsea, manager Mikel Arteta delivered mixed news for fans at the pre-match press conference.
Midfielder Mikel Merino will undergo surgery due to injury, while winger Bukayo Saka's injury has been assessed as not serious.
Merino suffered a foot injury in the previous match against Manchester United. Arteta confirmed that Merino's injury is of a very rare type and requires surgery. Arteta admitted, "This is a heavy blow to us."
Given Merino's versatility on the field and his importance to the team, coupled with only four months left in the season and multiple competitions, his long-term absence will undoubtedly leave Arsenal with limited options for their squad.
In contrast, Saka's situation is more optimistic. He was injured during the pre-match warm-up for the 4-0 victory over Leeds United in the last round. Arteta revealed that Saka's injury is not serious and he is recovering well, but whether he can be fit for the crucial match against Chelsea still depends on a final medical evaluation.
With the transfer window closing on, a wave of injuries has forced Arsenal to reassess the market. Following the departure of young talent Ethan Nwaneri to Marseille and the sudden serious injury to Merino, Arteta has hinted that the team is actively seeking alternatives.
"Losing such an important player at such a crucial moment in the season, we must do everything we can to see if there are any available signings," Arteta said. "If we can find a final solution, I will try to implement it; if not, we will continue to fight with the existing squad."
