In the sixth round of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League, Bayer Leverkusen hosted Newcastle United. After 90 minutes of intense play, the two sides ultimately drew 2-2.
Just 13 minutes into the game, Bayer Leverkusen took an unexpected lead: Alex Garcia took a corner kick from the left, Robert Andritch shook off Sandro Tonali's close marking and headed the ball into the net after it deflected off Bruno Guimarães.
Taking a one-goal lead, Bayer Leverkusen grew increasingly confident. In the 28th minute, Ibrahim Maza surged halfway into the penalty area and his shot at the near post was saved by Aaron Ramsdale. In the 44th minute, Alejandro Grimaldo's long pass from midfield found the onrushing Ernest Poku, whose shot was also blocked by Ramsdale. In first-half stoppage time, Arthur crossed from the right into the penalty area, and Jarel Kuenza's powerful shot was tipped over the bar by Ramsdale.
After the break, the situation on the field changed dramatically. In the 50th minute, Mark Flecken brought down Nick Waltmard, who was about to shoot, in the penalty area, and the referee immediately awarded a penalty. Anthony Gordon then converted the penalty, helping Newcastle United equalize the score at 1-1.
With both sides back on level terms, Newcastle United's momentum surged. In the 63rd minute, Tonali intercepted the ball in the attacking third and provided an assist for Gordon, whose shot inside the box hit the right post. In the 74th minute, Gordon crossed from the left wing, and Lewis Miley headed the ball in to extend the lead to 2-1.
However, Leverkusen did not give up. In the 76th minute, Grimaldo crossed from the left, and Nathan Trae's header at the near post was saved by Ramsdale. Christian Cofane followed up with a shot, which was also caught by Ramsdale. In the 82nd minute, Jacob Murphy's long-range shot hit Leverkusen's right post again, creating a counter-attack opportunity for the home team. Trae received a through ball from Grimaldo on this counter-attack and attempted a shot, but it was once again saved by Ramsdale.
In the 88th minute, Leverkusen finally equalized: Mazar delivered a precise through ball from the edge of the penalty area, and Grimaldo sprinted forward and slotted the ball into the net. Neither side managed to score again, and the match ended in a draw.
