According to multiple US media reports, the NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder has reached a five-year rookie maximum salary contract extension with young center Chet Holmgren with a total value of nearly $240 million.

This is the second major contract extension for the Oklahoma City Thunder since they won the championship last month. The other one is the core of the team - MVP winner, Finals MVP and scoring champion Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has signed a four-year, $285 million contract.

Holmgren, only 22 years old, is one of the core players in the Oklahoma City Thunder's rebuilding. He was selected as the second pick in 2022, but missed his entire rookie season due to a serious foot injury.

In the 2023-24 season, Holmgren made his official debut with 82 games, averaging 15 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2.2 blocks per game, with a three-point shooting percentage of 37.9%, and amazing performances on both offense and defense.

Although Holmgren played in only 32 games in the past season due to a hip injury, he participated in the entire playoffs, averaging 15.2 points and 8.7 rebounds in 23 games, and was an indispensable part of the team's championship.

Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti praised Holmgren's resilience: "The injuries and challenges during the season have forged this team. Chet's return not only requires physical recovery, but also shows a high level of self-sacrifice and team awareness."

With the completion of Holmgren's contract extension, the Oklahoma City Thunder is also expected to reach a contract extension agreement with another main player Jalen Williams in the near future, completely locking in the core lineup of this young dynasty.
