Barcelona sporting director Deco revealed on Monday that he is confident Frenkie de Jong's contract renewal is progressing.

De Jong has only one year left on his contract at Barcelona, but renewal talks have been slow to progress. In an exclusive interview with Mundo Deportivo, Deco said: "We are in discussions. Frenkie is enjoying his time at Barcelona. He is showing increasing maturity in every aspect, both within his family and with the team."

"If you are a responsible player, you don't stay at Barcelona just because you are there, but to fight for titles. He believes he has the ability to fight for titles, so he wants to stay at Barcelona."

Deco concluded: "The club sees him as a key player for their current plans and for the coming years, so I'm confident the renewal will go through smoothly." When asked if he was sure De Jong would renew his contract, Deco again gave an affirmative answer: "Of course, I'm sure."

De Jong, 28, primarily plays as a central midfielder and joined Barcelona from Ajax for €86 million in 2019. To date, he has made 265 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 19 goals and providing 24 assists, winning two La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey titles, and two Spanish Super Cups.

According to previous reports from Spanish media, De Jong's new contract is expected to last until June 30, 2029.
