The Utah Jazz have no intention of trading Lauri Markkanen at this time, ESPN's Tim McMahon reported on Sunday.
With former Celtics assistant general manager Austin Ainge taking over as president of basketball operations for the Jazz last month, the team's rejuvenation process has accelerated significantly. They have sent away Jordan Clarkson, John Collins and Collin Sexton, sparking widespread speculation about Markkanen's future.
However, McMahon believes that the Jazz have no plans to trade Markkanen this summer. Although Markkanen is by no means unsaleable, the Jazz still regard him as an important part of the future core lineup.
Sources also revealed that the Jazz had listened to offers for Markkanen last year, but no deal was ever close. The two sides eventually signed a five-year, $238 million contract extension, making Markkanen untradeable before the trade deadline last season.
Markkanen, 28, plays as a forward and was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the seventh pick in the first round in 2017. He was then traded to the Chicago Bulls by the Timberwolves and moved to the Cleveland Cavaliers in August 2021.
In September 2022, Markkanen was sent to the Jazz as part of the Donovan Mitchell trade. He had a full outbreak in his first season with the Jazz, averaging a career-high 25.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game, shooting 49.9% from the field and 39.1% from three-point range.
However, Markkanen only played 47 times last season due to a back injury, averaging 19.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. His shooting percentage dropped to 42.3% and his three-point shooting percentage was 34.6%.
