In France's 2-0 victory over Ukraine in their opening World Cup qualifier, captain Kylian Mbappé scored a goal to bring his national team goal tally to 51, tying with legendary striker Thierry Henry.

The historic moment occurred in the 82nd minute of the game, when Mbappé's goal sealed the team's victory. Mbappé is now tied for second on the team's all-time scorer list, behind only Olivier Giroud's 57 goals.

After the game, Mbappé admitted that it was a great honor to be able to tie Henry: "Salute to Titi! It is incredible to be able to play alongside him. He is a role model for France and all forwards. I have great respect and admiration for him."

However, the 26-year-old striker also stressed that personal records are not his main focus. Mbappé said: "The record is getting closer, but it is not what I think about all day. For me, winning games and titles is the most important thing."

Since his French debut in 2017, Mbappé has already won the 2018 World Cup and the 2020-21 Nations League, and is poised to challenge Olivier Giroud's record. Giroud will officially retire after the 2024 European Championship, leaving Mbappé ample room to catch up.

France will face Iceland next Tuesday. Mbappé revealed that his goal remains to lead the team to continuous victory and championships. He said: "Becoming the top scorer in the history of the French team is not easy, but I hope to write history with victory and honors."
