In a recent interview, Atlanta discussed the topic of his future coaching career and insisted that he never said he would leave Atlanta, where he has coached for many years, after the end of the season.
In the 34th round of the Serie A, Atalanta tied Lecce 1-1 after Retegui scored a penalty. After 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss in the last 5 rounds, Atalanta currently ranks third in the standings with 65 points, 3 points ahead of Juventus in 4th place, and is still on track to qualify for the Champions League.
Atalanta coach Gasperini said, "I hope everyone will not take the Champions League qualification for granted. For me, leading Atalanta into the Champions League is the top achievement, even though we have tried to hit the league title before."
“We definitely wanted to give ourselves and the players some motivation because we were in that position with nine games left in the league. But at the end of the day, qualifying for the Champions League is a phenomenal achievement in itself.
In addition, Gasperini became the head coach of Atalanta in June 2016 and led Atalanta to win the UEFA Europa League last season.
When asked about his future coaching career, Gasperini said, "I never said I was leaving. My original words at the time were that I would not renew my contract. That is two different things. Now the only goal is to qualify for the Champions League. This is not something that can be accomplished in one season, but the result of gradual accumulation over the years."
"I have a great bond with Atalanta. People sometimes overlook how many players we lost due to injuries, but overall the situation is positive and we just need to finish the season well."
