Kings general manager Monty McNair confirms resignation, successor to be Scott Perry

The Sacramento Kings announced on Thursday that they had parted ways with general manager Monty McNair effective immediately. ESPN reporter Shams Charanie said the two sides reached a mutual agreement on the matter after Wednesday's play-in game.

The Kings ranked 10th in the Western Conference with a record of 40 wins and 42 losses this season and needed to fight for a playoff qualification through the play-in tournament. However, they lost to the Dallas Mavericks 106-120 at home on Wednesday night and eventually missed the playoffs.

Commenting on McNair's departure, Kings owner and chairman Vivek Ranadive said: "I sincerely thank Monte for his leadership and valuable contributions during his tenure in Sacramento. He has helped us build a solid foundation for continued success here, and we wish him and his family the best in their future endeavors."

Monty McNair has served as the Kings' general manager since September 2020, with full responsibility for basketball operations. Prior to this, he served as an executive of the Houston Rockets for 13 years.

Under McNair's leadership, the Kings won at least 40 games in three consecutive seasons - the first time they have achieved this since the 2005-06 season. In the 2023-24 season, McNair helped the Kings end their 16-year playoff drought with a record of 48 wins and 34 losses, and was elected NBA Executive of the Year.

However, the Kings have undergone major changes in their organizational structure recently. Due to the poor start of the season, Ranadive fired head coach Mike Brown in December last year and traded De'Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs. Kings assistant general manager Wes Wilcox also left in March and subsequently became general manager of the Utah Jazz.

Shams Charania went on to point out that Scott Perry, 61, will soon be the Kings' new general manager. Perry has nearly 25 years of NBA executive experience and has held management positions with the Detroit Pistons, Seattle SuperSonics, Orlando Magic and New York Knicks. He also briefly served as the Kings' vice president of basketball operations in 2017.

The appointment is seen as an important part of the Kings' management restructuring process.
