Matt Doherty: As long as we maintain our confidence, anything is possible.

Matt Doherty believes that the increased intensity of training under Rob Edwards has significantly contributed to Wolves' impressive four-game unbeaten start to 2026. The defender has not only made an impact on the pitch but has also demonstrated leadership off it. Following the defeat to Brentford in December, Doherty was outspoken in the dressing room and in front of the media, hoping to use this experience to propel the team onto their current positive winning streak.

Wolverhampton Wanderers cruised to victory in the FA Cup last Saturday, easily defeating League Two relegation-threatened Shrewsbury Town to advance to the fourth round, where they will face fellow League Two side Grimsby Town away from home. Matt Doherty hopes the team can carry their momentum from the past few weeks into Sunday's Premier League match against Newcastle United and throughout the remainder of the season, keeping the players' belief in creating miracles alive.

Matt Doherty said: "Of course we want to win every game. The unbeaten start to the season has given us good momentum, and it has also given five or six players who hadn't had many opportunities to play a chance. You never want to lose, especially at home against a lower-league team. In the end, we did what we were supposed to do, and it's a positive result for the team."

"That's the point of cup competitions. They provide players with opportunities to play and prove themselves, and they also allow players who have just recovered from injury to return to the field. If that match had been in the Premier League, things might have been different. This is what makes cup competitions so unique. Usually, players get the chance to showcase themselves in such matches, and I think many of them did last weekend."

"All the teams in League One and League Two are stronger than people think. They are constantly moving towards the top of the league pyramid and are always improving. Therefore, this will not be an easy game, especially playing away from home and potentially facing bad weather, which will make the challenge even greater."

“We’ve seen their performance against Manchester United in the cup and we know what kind of ability they have. So, although the draw seems favorable on paper, the reality is not so simple, just look at what Crystal Palace went through this weekend. We will give it our all, and this game may also provide an opportunity for some players who haven’t had much playing time or have been out of form recently to prove themselves, help them integrate into the team, and find their rhythm.”

"But we always hold the FA Cup in the highest regard because the club has achieved great results in this competition. I myself have represented the team to the semi-finals, so the FA Cup is undoubtedly a competition that we value highly."

"The lads have experience playing against these types of teams, and the coaching staff is well aware of this and will pass that information on to the players. As a relatively experienced player, I will also share my experience with them. More importantly, they have previously played against lower-league teams in cup competitions in their respective leagues, so they all know how to handle such matches."

“There is always a clear difference between playing at home and away. For example, if we were playing Shrewsbury away on Saturday, the environment and atmosphere would be completely different. This away game against Grimsby is fairer in that respect, and it is destined to be a great match.”

Speaking about the team's desire to continue their current good momentum, Matt Doherty said: "We are very aware of the importance of this, especially after Nottingham Forest's victory over West Ham United, as we are in the process of catching up. We understand that we must keep winning and never let the gap widen again."

“We must remain undefeated and keep going, because a single victory can change the course of the entire season, and this weekend’s game is no exception. Maintaining momentum is crucial because the future is full of uncertainty. Although the team had a six-game winning streak last year and the lineup has changed, anything is possible as long as the players remain confident.”
