Lens announced on Friday that they have extended Ruben Aguilar's contract from 2026 to June 30, 2028.
"Reuben's contract extension reflects the mutual recognition between him and the club," Lens general manager Pierre Dereosie said in a statement. "He has only played for the Red and Gold Army for two seasons, but he has deeply integrated into the club culture and grown into one of the main leaders in the locker room."
“We share the same values with Reuben: simplicity, sincerity, and a spirit of giving his all and selfless dedication. He has spent time with the fans at Café Muriel, aptly showing that he fits in with the family culture of the club. His experience, fighting spirit and determination in the top league will continue to be a valuable asset to the team.”
Aguilar, 32, was born in Grenoble, France, and received youth training in Grenoble and Saint-Etienne from the age of 12. He made his professional debut for Auxerre on August 1, 2014, and then played for Montpellier, Monaco and other teams.
In September 2023, Aguilar joined Lens from Monaco for 3.5 million euros. He plays as a right winger, right back, center back and other positions in Lens. So far, he has made 45 appearances, scored 2 goals and provided 5 assists.
Despite missing the season from November 2024 to February 2025 due to right shoulder surgery, Aguilar still played 15 times for Lens, contributing 1 goal and 2 assists. Renewing his contract with Lens is exactly what Aguilar expected. He publicly expressed his intention to stay in the team in late April: "I am very happy in Lens. The club and the people around me are very satisfying to me, although the weather is still a challenge. My family is also very happy in Lens."
