Official: Celta Vigo extends manager Claudio Gilardes' contract until 2028

Celta Vigo officially announced on Wednesday that they have extended the contract of 38-year-old head coach Claudio Gilardes. The new contract extends the original expiry date of 2027 by one year, until June 30, 2028.

According to Cadena SER, the contract extension aims to improve Giraldez's salary. With the extension officially finalized, previous rumors surrounding him with clubs such as Girona, Villarreal, and Athletic Bilbao have been dispelled.

Guiraldez took over at Celta Vigo in 2016 and was promoted directly from the reserve team to the first team in March 2024. After taking over, he first led Celta Vigo to safety from the bottom of the standings, and the following year they secured a European qualification spot by finishing seventh in La Liga.

Celta Vigo have continued their upward trend this season. They currently sit sixth in La Liga with a record of 10 wins, 11 draws, and 8 losses, accumulating 41 points, and have successfully advanced to the Europa League quarterfinals.

Regarding Gilardes' consistent coaching performance, Celta Vigo explained in their contract extension statement: "This development is complemented by the club's clear team-building philosophy and its unwavering commitment to its youth academy, in which academy players occupy a core position in the first team. At the same time, this model extends to the coaching level – the club has a coaching team developed domestically, and all members have renewed their contracts."

Finally, Celta Vigo concluded: "Through this contract extension, Celta Vigo and Claudio Gilardes will continue to grow together, along a path that promises to leave an important mark on the club's history."
