Genoa announced on Thursday that they have completed a contract extension with captain John Vázquez. The new contract will extend the contract by one year, from its original expiration date of 2027, until June 30, 2028.

The 26-year-old Vázquez, born in Navojoa, Mexico, primarily plays as a central defender. He spent the first four years of his career with Sonora, Monterrey and Pumas in his native Mexico before joining Genoa on a loan-to-buy basis in August 2021.

So far, Vazquez has made 108 appearances for Genoa, scoring 6 goals and providing 1 assist. He also played for Cremona on loan in the 2021/22 season, contributing 1 goal in 29 games across all competitions.

As for the national team, Vázquez has played 36 times for Mexico so far, scoring 1 goal and providing 2 assists, winning two CONCACAF Gold Cups (2023, 2025) and one CONCACAF Nations League championship (2025) with the team.

In addition to Vazquez, Genoa's other key player, Morten Frendrup, has also completed his contract extension. The club's next targets for renewal are 28-year-old Spanish left-back Aaron Martín, 29-year-old Norwegian midfielder Morten Thorsby, and 19-year-old Italian winger Seydou Fini. Aaron Martín is close to extending his contract until June 30, 2028.
