The Professional Basketball Writers Association (PBWA) of America officially announced on Wednesday that Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant, 36, won the Magic Johnson Award for the 2024/25 season. This is Durant's second time to be elected after the 2010/11 season, making him the fourth two-time winner since the establishment of the award.
The Magic Johnson Award has been awarded annually since PBWA established it in 2001 to recognize NBA players who have both on-court performance and media literacy. Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game this season, and was selected to the All-Star team for the 15th time, which PBWA believes meets the selection criteria.
"We are very pleased to once again recognize Kevin Durant with this award," said Howard Baker, PBWA President. "Kevin has always been one of the most thoughtful and accessible NBA stars. He always makes time for reporters and never shys away from any topic, whether it's a formal interview or a casual chat. He is as keen to delve into the details of a single possession as he is to discuss the big issues facing the league. His passion for basketball is always evident. Our members also appreciate Kevin's public advocacy for restoring media access to locker rooms after the pandemic, knowing that such access is critical to fostering trust and understanding between players and reporters."
In addition to Durant, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Novam Mitchell ranked second in the voting. Other finalists included Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo, Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton and Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green.
