In the sixth round of the 2025/26 Premier League, Aston Villa hosted Fulham. After 90 minutes of fierce battle, Villa finally won 3-1.
Just three minutes into the match, Fulham got off to a dream start: Sasa Lukic's corner kick from the left was headed home by Raul Jimenez. However, Villa, trailing by a goal, quickly launched a counterattack. In the 17th minute, Calvin Bessey's poor back pass in the penalty area led to John McGinn's shot, which went just wide.
In the 26th minute, Fulham nearly doubled their lead. After Morgan Rogers lost possession, Josh King raced from midfield into the Villa penalty area, only to have his shot blocked by Matty Cash, who had tracked back into defence. Fulham subsequently raised the possibility of a handball by Cash, but the referee didn't award a penalty.
In the 37th minute, Villa finally equalized. Lucas Digne sent a precise long pass from the backcourt, and Ollie Watkins scored his first goal of the season with a single shot in the penalty area.
In the second half, Villa's morale was boosted by their equalizer. In the 49th minute, Emiliano Buendía's cross from the right was met by McGinn, who dribbled to the top of the key before firing a long shot into the net. Just two minutes later, McGinn's cross from the left was met by Rodgers, who teed up Buendía for a close-range finish. Villa's lead was now 3-1, a two-goal advantage they maintained until the final whistle.
This comeback victory against Fulham was also Villa's first victory in the Premier League this season. With a record of 1 win, 3 draws and 2 losses, they have temporarily escaped the relegation zone and risen to 16th place.
