Cagliari released a statement on Wednesday announcing that 52-year-old Davide Nicola is no longer the first team coach.

The statement read: "Cagliari and Davide Nicola have officially parted ways. The club would like to thank coach Nicola and his team for their hard work, professionalism and passion this season, which ultimately ensured the team's stay in Serie A."

Davide Nicola has been in charge of coaching since 2010, and has served as head coach for Lumezzane, Livorno, Bari, Crotone, Udinese, Genoa, Torino, Salernitana, Empoli, etc. He took over Cagliari in July 2024, replacing the Italian coach Ranieri who entered retirement.

In his first season as coach of Cagliari, Nicola led the team to a record of 11 wins, 9 draws and 21 losses, and finally ranked 15th in Serie A.

According to Sky Sports Italy, Nicola had a long meeting with the club yesterday. He put forward a number of requirements to improve the team's competitiveness, but failed to reach a consensus with the management. Due to different philosophies, the two sides finally decided to part ways.

As for Nicola's successor, Cagliari has reportedly already decided on him. If nothing unexpected happens, the current Cagliari U19 coach Fabio Pisana will take over the first team.
