Union Berlin announced on Tuesday that German left-back Derek Cohen has signed from Galatasaray. He is expected to sign a four-year contract until June 30, 2029.
Galatasaray added that the base fee for this transfer is €4 million, which can reach up to €4.5 million after including bonuses. If Cohen transfers again in the future, Union Berlin will have to pay Galatasaray 20% of the remaining amount after deducting €2 million.
Regarding Cohen's joining, Horst Herdt, head of professional football at Union Berlin, explained: "Derrick has speed, confrontation ability, and experience in the Bundesliga. We are confident that he can contribute to the team immediately, and his personality is a perfect fit with ours. With his flexibility and offensive desire, he will provide us with more tactical options on the left."
The 26-year-old Cohen made his debut in the Bayern Munich youth training, and then moved to Willem II and Hannover 96. He joined Galatasaray for 3.35 million euros in February 2024 and was loaned to Werder Bremen in August of the same year.
To date, Cohen has made 19 appearances for Galatasaray, contributing one goal and two assists, winning two Turkish Super League titles and one Turkish Super Cup. He also made 30 appearances for Werder Bremen, scoring two goals and providing two assists.
After completing the transfer, Cohen said: "Union Berlin is a great fit for me - it is a club with principles, clear ideas and strong team cohesion. I hope to play to my strengths on the wing, and I also believe that my characteristics are very consistent with the team's style of play. I am now full of expectations for the team, the fans in Berlin and the overall environment, and I am very happy to understand and integrate into it all."
