Chelsea suffered a 2-5 defeat to French giants Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie, leaving manager Liam Rossinier disappointed with the result.
Despite Chelsea's excellent performance for most of the game and their tenacious two equalizers, a late collapse led to them conceding three goals. In a post-match interview, Rossinier stated that the team's tactical execution in the first 75 minutes was satisfactory, and they even dominated possession at times.
"We played very well before conceding the third goal," Rossinier said helplessly, "but it's pointless to say that now because the final result is too glaring. On a night that was originally satisfying, the last 15 to 20 minutes were simply insane."
The turning point of the match was both dramatic and heartbreaking. With the score tied at 2-2, Chelsea had a chance to take the lead, but João Pedro's goal was disallowed due to Enzo Fernandes being just an inch offside. Paris Saint-Germain then punished Chelsea's defensive lapse with their finishing prowess.
Rossinier pointed out that what hurt him the most was the fifth goal conceded: "Even though the score was 4-2, we still had a great chance when we returned to Stamford Bridge. But we failed to stay calm and couldn't even defend against the opponent's most basic attacking tactics. This was completely shooting ourselves in the foot."
Returning to London with a three-goal deficit, Chelsea will face an incredibly difficult second leg. Despite this seemingly insurmountable obstacle, Rossinier conveyed confidence to the team and fans: "The fifth goal conceded made the road to the next round extremely difficult, but returning to Stamford Bridge and completing a comeback is by no means impossible."
