Manchester United manager Reuben Amorim has publicly defended goalkeeper Andre Onana ahead of their crucial Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon, confirming the Cameroonian will continue to start.
In the first leg, Onana made two key mistakes, which directly led to Manchester United's failure to win. In the subsequent Premier League, he was excluded from the match against Newcastle, a decision that raised questions about his status and future. But Amorim chose to support the 29-year-old goalkeeper at the pre-match press conference.
Faced with questions about whether Onana should be abandoned, Amorim was firm: "We can work with Andre."
"If our attack is sharper and creates more threats, Onana will perform better. He has already proved his strength at Inter Milan and is a top goalkeeper."
"Sometimes players have up-and-down seasons. If a player's performance drops and we immediately overturn everything, that's not the way to go now."
Amorim put himself in the same position: "If we talk about mistakes, my coaching record is the worst in the team. But I still think I am the right person to coach this team, and so is Onana."
Captain Harry Maguire also expressed his support for Onana in front of the media: "He has already proved himself at Inter Milan and played in the Champions League final."
"Every player will experience ups and downs in their career. The key is how you can regroup and regain your confidence."
"He may feel that things are not going well for him now, but he will take it game by game. I have played many games in front of him. He is a very good goalkeeper with a lot of experience. We all trust him as a team."
