According to a report by ESPN's Shams Charania on Monday, the NBA is scheduled to hold a Board of Governors meeting on March 24-25. The main agenda item will be to discuss the expansion proposals for Las Vegas and Seattle and to initiate the first round of voting.
According to the league's bylaws, an expansion proposal requires the approval of at least 23 of the 30 team owners to pass. However, Shams pointed out that this vote was a routine procedure and the proposal is expected to be approved smoothly.
Once the first round of voting passes, the NBA will officially begin the bidding process. According to league insiders, the bid amount for a single team will be between $7 billion and $10 billion.
Shams also understands that the two new teams plan to officially join the NBA in the 2028/29 season. To balance the 16 teams in each conference, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Memphis Grizzlies are highly likely to be placed in the Eastern Conference. The newly added teams in Las Vegas and Seattle, however, are extremely likely to end up in the Western Conference.
Shams continued, stating that support for expansion is growing within the league, with most owners believing that Las Vegas and Seattle are poised to bring sustained revenue growth. However, some owners remain cautious, concerned that expansion would dilute their stake from 1/30 to 1/32.
