According to media reports, Steven Gerrard is in talks with Scottish Premier League giants Rangers about the possibility of returning to the team as head coach.

The former Liverpool and England midfielder, who enjoys immense popularity among fans, has become a leading candidate for the club's new manager, having quickly launched the search process after dismissing manager Russell Martin.

Sources revealed that Gerrard was one of several candidates the club planned to contact, but his willingness to return made him the leading candidate. The club's management hopes to have in-depth discussions with him in the coming days to fill the coaching vacancy.

Gerrard managed Rangers from 2018 to 2021, leading the team to their first Scottish Premier League title in a decade, ending Celtic's long dominance. In November 2021, he moved to Premier League Aston Villa but was sacked after a poor start to the second season.

Gerrard then went to Saudi Arabia to coach Al-Ettifaq in July 2023. The two sides negotiated to terminate their contract in January this year. Recently, Gerrard has repeatedly expressed his desire to return to coaching in Europe.

In an interview, when asked about the next team he would coach, Gerrard said: "I want to return to a team that is competitive and can compete for championships, because that suits me better."

Rangers currently sit eighth in the Scottish Premier League, having won just five of their last 17 games, 11 points behind leaders Hearts. The club hopes to re-appoint a new manager to boost morale and competitiveness.
