The Swedish Football Association (SvFF) officially announced on Tuesday that Jon Dahl Tomasson has been dismissed from his position as national team coach, effective immediately. His successor remains unknown.

The 49-year-old Tomasson previously coached Malmö and Blackburn Rovers, leading them to two consecutive Swedish Super League titles. He replaced Janne Andersson as Swedish head coach in March last year and has led the team to a record of 9 wins, 2 draws and 7 losses.

Various signs indicate that the main reason for Tomasson's dismissal is Sweden's poor performance in the 2026 World Cup European qualifiers. Despite featuring star players like Alexander Isak and Viktor Čekeres, they have gone four games without a win and currently sit at the bottom of Group B with one draw and three losses.

In a statement, Simon Österlund, president of the Swedish Football Association, said: "The decision of the Football Association Board is based on the fact that the results achieved by the Swedish men's national team have not met our expectations. The opportunity to qualify for the World Cup through the play-offs in March still exists, and our responsibility is to focus on creating the best conditions for the team to reach the World Cup finals. In this context, we believe it is necessary to appoint a new national team coach."

Kim Sjöllström, technical director of the Swedish Football Association, added: "We have great confidence in our current group of international players and want to create new opportunities for them to perform to their full potential. We still believe that if we have the opportunity to participate in the play-offs in March, this team has the potential to qualify for the World Cup."
