According to well-known NBA reporter Marc Stein on Monday, the Dallas Mavericks plan to strengthen the point guard position this summer. Their potential targets include Jrue Holiday of the Boston Celtics, Lonzo Ball of the Chicago Bulls, and Chris Paul of the San Antonio Spurs.
Various signs indicate that the Mavericks' move is intended to fill the vacancy left by Kyrie Irving due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. If all goes well, Irving is expected to return from injury before January next year.
In the Mavericks' list of players, Holiday, 34, played a key role in the Bucks and Celtics' championships, but his three-year contract worth more than $100 million has made trading him much more difficult. In contrast, although Ball, 27, has a knee injury, his trading threshold is significantly lower and his feasibility is higher.
In addition to Holiday and Ball, Chris Paul, who is about to turn 40, is also the focus of the Mavericks. He played all 82 regular season games for the Spurs this season, averaging 8.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game, with a shooting percentage of 42.7% and a three-point shooting percentage of 37.7%, showing excellent organizational skills and stability. As a veteran point guard who is about to become a free agent, Paul is expected to provide the Mavericks with much-needed organizational skills and leadership qualities at a relatively low cost.
