The NBA officially announced that Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star guard Anthony Edwards and Orlando Magic guard Desmond Bayne have each been fined $25,000 for dangerous violations involving "forcefully throwing the game ball into the stands."
Edwards' violation occurred during Tuesday's game between the Timberwolves and the Portland Trail Blazers. With the buzzer sounding at the end of the first half and the Blazers' final shot missing, Edwards grabbed the rebound and hurled it across the court toward the opposing basket.
According to video footage released by the NBA along with its official announcement, the basketball, which flew across the court, unfortunately struck a stadium worker in the head.
It's worth noting that this isn't the first time Edwards has been heavily penalized for on-court disciplinary issues. Last season, he was fined a total of $420,000 by the league for eight different violations. This included a $35,000 fine for failing to leave the court promptly after being ejected and throwing the ball into the stands.
Orlando Magic guard Desmond Bayne also received a fine for the same reason on the same day. After the Magic's thrilling 110-109 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night, Bayne also threw the game ball forcefully into the stands.
The league issued two fines on the same day, reiterating the bottom line of on-court discipline to all players: any behavior that may endanger the personal safety of spectators and staff, whether due to emotional excitement or unintentional misbehavior, will face severe penalties from the NBA.
