On August 24, according to well-known NBA reporter Jake Fischer, the Phoenix Suns have offered Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga a four-year contract worth a total of $90 million, with the last year including a player option.
Despite the Suns' substantial offer, Kuminga still hopes for a higher contract extension from the Warriors. Warriors team reporter Slater further revealed that Kuminga's agency insisted on a three- year, $82 million contract. Under this offer, Kuminga's average annual salary would reach approximately $27.33 million, significantly higher than the Suns' average.
Sources indicate that the Warriors were only willing to offer Kuminga a two- year, $45 million contract extension with clear additional conditions. The Warriors wanted Kuminga to waive his trade no-no on the qualifying offer and add a team option to the contract. This approach played a significant role in the delay in negotiations.
Despite the Warriors' resolute stance, Kuminga's future remains uncertain. On the one hand, the Suns' offer reflects their commitment and expectations for him, especially given the team's urgent need for forward reinforcement. On the other hand, the Warriors are attempting to secure this promising forward at a more conservative price while retaining operational flexibility.
As a young player the Warriors have focused on developing in recent years, Kuminga showed significant progress this past season. His offensive and defensive impact and physical talent are widely anticipated, but due to the Warriors' tight salary structure and considerations for future roster adjustments, management is cautious about renewing his contract. The Suns' involvement undoubtedly complicates these renewal negotiations.
