Barcelona club officially confirmed that Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong suffered a minor injury in the obturator externus muscle of his right leg. His specific return time will depend on the progress of his recovery.
At the start of the new season, De Jong made two appearances for the club. He played the full match in the opening league match away to Mallorca, a 3-0 victory. He also started in the final league match before the international break, a 1-1 draw away to Rayo Vallecano.
De Jong's consistent performance remains an integral part of coach Xavi's system. However, injuries struck unexpectedly during international matches. In the Netherlands' 1-1 World Cup qualifier against Poland, De Jong was included in the starting lineup, playing alongside club teammate Robert Lewandowski.
However, De Jong was substituted in the 83rd minute due to injury, leaving him out of the national team training camp early. De Jong's injury is currently assessed as minor, but Barcelona will proceed with caution given the recent start of the season and the tight schedule ahead. Whether De Jong will be available for the restart remains to be seen.
The 28-year-old De Jong signed a five-year contract with Barcelona from Ajax in January 2019. So far, De Jong has made 260 appearances for Barcelona, contributing 19 goals and 21 assists.
