Several British media outlets on Thursday unanimously condemned a foreign journalist who, during a pre-match press conference, publicly asked Arne Slot whether he had discussed the possibility of being replaced as Liverpool manager with Xabi Alonso.
According to British media reports, many journalists believed that the reporter, believed to be from France or Spain, showed a severe lack of respect for Slot by asking such an inappropriate question in broken English, demonstrating a breach of journalistic ethics and adding unnecessary public pressure to the Dutch coach and Alonso.
The news website This Is Anfield and and YouTube channel RedmenTV which were run by Liverpool's official UK supporters group, also echoed the sentiment, saying even though Slot has faced criticism for Liverpool's poor performances this season, and even endured boos from his own fans at one point, this does not justify a journalist challenging his boundaries by openly and directly asking him such a question.
A joint statement from Liverpool's official Hong Kong and Malaysian supporters' groups said, while fans, media, and journalists have the right to criticize Slot and the players' poor performances, they shouldn't openly make excessive statements in just for the sake of criticizing.
Furthermore, the team's recent form has clearly improved, achieving a 13-game unbeaten run. Slot and the players deserve more support, not being asked about "How do you view the possibility of Xabi Alonso taking over as Liverpool manager".
In fact, although Slot himself jokingly said at the press conference that he hadn't spoken with Alonso on the phone about "what challenges the latter will face in the next six months after being appointed as interim manager," his face clearly showed disgust when answering this question, and he bluntly said after the Q&A session that "this is the weirdest question I've ever been asked in my career."
Since November, Slot has been under public scrutiny for Liverpool's poor performances this season, and calls for his sacking have never ceased.
Despite the Premier League champions' comfortable 0-3 away win against Marseille this midweek, which extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 13 games, the former Feyenoord manager is still facing rumours of his impending sacking.
Unfortunately, this all stems from Alonso's recent falling out with Real Madrid and subsequent sacking, fueled by unscrupulous media outlets falsely claiming he is "ready to return to his beloved Liverpool."
