It is urgent to strengthen the backcourt lineup. The Suns signed Goodwin and Jared Butler

According to ESPN's Shams Charania on Wednesday, the Phoenix Suns have completed two signings in the backcourt. They first claimed former Lakers guard Jordan Goodwin during the clarification period, and then signed a one-year contract with Jared Butler.

Goodwin previously signed a $2.5 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, of which only $25,000 is guaranteed. If he is not cut by the Suns before January 7 next year, the rest of his salary will automatically become fully guaranteed.

Other sources pointed out that Butler signed a non-guaranteed contract, which was also confirmed by Suns reporter John Gambadoro.

With the arrival of Goodwin and Butler, the Suns' outside lineup has been further strengthened. In the 2025/26 season, the Suns plan to have Devin Booker as the starting point guard, while Gillespie, Goodwin and Butler will play substitute roles.

Jordan Goodwin

The 26-year-old Goodwin was waived by the Lakers earlier this week to make room for Marcus Smart. He played 29 regular season games for the Lakers last season, averaging 5.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game, shooting 43.8% from the field and 38.2% from three-point range.

In the playoffs, Goodwin played a total of 4 times, averaging only 0.8 points, 0.5 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game.

Before joining the Lakers, Goodwin played for the Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns and Memphis Grizzlies. He spent one season with the Suns, during which he played in 40 regular season games, averaging 5.0 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game, shooting 38.9% from the field and 28.7% from three-point range.

Jared Butler

Butler chose to become a free agent after the 76ers declined to exercise his $2.35 million team option. The 24-year-old was selected by the New Orleans Pelicans with the 40th pick in the second round in 2021, and then moved to the Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder, Washington Wizards and Philadelphia 76ers.

According to ESPN statistics, Butler played 60 regular season games for the Wizards and 76ers last season, averaging 9.0 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game, with a shooting percentage of 44.8% and a three-point shooting percentage of 35.5%.
