In the first round of the new Premier League season, Sunderland gave a perfect performance at their home ground, the Stadium of Light, defeating West Ham United 3-0 and ushering in their biggest opening day victory since 1974.
After the game, Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris praised the team's energy, unity and close connection with the fans.
Sunderland secured victory with goals from Eliezer Mayenda, defender Dan Ballard and Wilson Isidor. The boiling atmosphere at the Stadium of Light marked a fantastic start to Sunderland's return to the top flight after many years.
"I'm really happy for the club, the team, the players and our fans," Le Brice said in the post-match press conference. "Returning to the Premier League is really important for us and the connection with the fans in the stands today was really impressive."
Talking about the course of the game, Le Brice admitted that the team seemed a bit restrained in the first half: "West Ham started better because they are more experienced. We need time to adapt to this level of competition. After all, we made a lot of adjustments in the pre-season. Fortunately, after some changes in the midfield, the team's performance improved significantly in the second half."
"Most importantly, the players showed they can improve themselves. Although it's just the beginning, they did a great job. Their performance also helped the new players to integrate into our identity and philosophy more quickly."
As for the future, Le Bris hopes to continue the characteristics of last season: "We must maintain unity and the overall defensive style of the team. The intensity of this kind of game is very important, and the players have integrated this quality into themselves."
