According to ESPN's Shams Charania on Wednesday, the Sacramento Kings have reached an early contract extension with Keegan Murray, who will receive a five-year, $140 million rookie contract with an average annual salary of $28 million.

This contract extension solidifies Murray's core role with the Kings, tying him for the team through the 2030-31 season. Since being drafted by the Kings with the fourth overall pick in the 2022 draft, Murray has appeared in 233 regular season games, 231 of which were starts. During that time, he averaged 13.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 32.5 minutes per game, helping the Kings end their 17-year playoff drought in his rookie season.

According to ESPN, Murray is one of three players in the past three seasons to reach 500 three-pointers, 150 blocks, and 150 steals. The others are Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Derrick White of the Boston Celtics.

Last season, Murray played in 76 regular season games for the Kings, averaging 12.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 34.3 minutes per game, shooting 44.4% from the field and 34.3% from three-point range. Although the Kings ultimately lost to the Mavericks in the playoffs, Murray's performance on both offense and defense still demonstrated his importance to the team.

Murray is expected to miss at least the first 10 regular season games due to a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb. During Murray's absence, his power forward duties will be shared by DeMar DeRozan and Dario Saric.
