Liverpool cruised to a convincing 0-3 away win over Marseille in the on matchday 7 of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League seasong at the Stade Vélodrome on Wednesday.

In the first half, Ekitike's goal from a close-range shot was ruled out, and late of the half, Szoboszlai scored a beautiful direct free-kick. In the second half, Ekitike's volley hit the crossbar, and Frimpong's close-range effort resulted in an own goal. At a crucial moment, Gakpo volleyed and scored. Ultimately, Liverpool secured a comfortable 0-3 victory over Marseille. After this round of the matches, the Reds, ending their draw streak and extending their unbeaten run to 13 games, rise to fourth on the table with 15 points, moving closer to qualifying for the round of 16s; Les Olympiennes, on the other hand, have dropped to 19th with 9 points.

First Half

In the 19th minute, Ryan Gravenberch made a straight pass from the right wing right flank. Alexis Mac Allister got the ball and took a few steps before volleying with his right foot from the right side of the box, but his shot went wide of the left side of the post.

4 minutes later, Dominik Szoboszlai crossed into the box from the right wing. Hugo Ekitike quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, slotted the ball into the empty net with his left foot from a very close distance in the box. However, the VAR assistant referee intervened immediately. After reviewing the VAR, it was confirmed that Ekitike was caught offside, thus the goal was ruled out.

In the 27th minute, Marseille had a free-kick opportunity. Mason Greenwood took the free-kick by making an overhead pass into the box. Leonardo Balerdi headed the ball across, Amine Gouiri quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, volleyed with his right foot from the right side of the box, but his shot was saved by Alisson.

In the first minute of first-half stoppage time, Liverpool earned a free kick opportunity. Dominik Szoboszlai took the free kick by directly striking the ball with his right foot from outside the penalty area. After deceiving the opposing team with his movement, his shot flew past the wall who jumped and into the bottom right corner of the net, leaving Gerónimo Rulli Rulli helpless. Liverpool broke the deadlock first to take a 0-1 lead!

This goal marked the Hungary national team captain's fourth goal from a long-range strike of the season, bringing his total tally to seven goals across all competitions.

He also broke two records, becoming the first player since Trent Alexander-Arnold to score directly from a free kick in the Champions League, and the first Liverpool player since Steven Gerrard and Mohamed Salah to score or assist in five consecutive Champions League matches!

At halftime, Marseille temporarily trailed Liverpool by 0-1 as they enter the break.

Second Half

Both teams switched sides as the match continued. In the 52nd minute, Facundo Medina passes horizontally from the left wing. After receiving the pass, Mason Greenwood took a few steps before taking unleashed a right-footed long shot from outside the penalty area, but his shot was saved by Alisson.

7 minutes later, Szoboszlai played a through ball from the attacking third, Ekitike quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, volleyed with his right foot from the left side of the box, but his shot unfortunately struck the crossbar and bounced off. Liverpool missed a golden opportunity to extend their lead!

Shortly after, Marseille launched a quick counter-attack. Greenwood passes horizontally from the right wing. Hamed Traoré quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, took a left-footed long shot from the edge of the penalty area, but his shot flew high out of the pitch.

In the 65th minute, Mac Allister made a straight pass from the left wing. Ekitike quickly followed up, got the ball and took a few steps, before volleying with his left foot at a difficult angle from the left side of the box, but shot flew high out of the pitch.

7 minutes later, McAllister passes horizontally from the attacking third. Jeremie Frimpong quickly followed up, got the ball, dribbled and cuts into the right side of the box before volleying the ball with his right foot from a difficult angle. His shot deflected off Rulli's leg and into the bottom left corner of the net, resulting in an own goal. Liverpool extended its lead to 0-2!

2 minutes later, Gravenberch passes horizontally from the attacking third. Cody Gakpo quickly followed up and stopped the ball before volleying the ball into the bottom right corner of the net from the left side of the box with his right foot, sealing a 0-3 victory for Liverpool!

When the final whistle is blown, Liverpool comfortably defeated Marseille with a 0-3 away win.
