The BBC reported on Thursday, citing Greek court sources, that Manchester United's England international defender Harry Maguire has been given a 15-month suspended sentence in a retrial for his involvement in a 2020 brawl in Greece.

According to the report, Maguire was initially convicted in 2020 of multiple assaults, attempted bribery, assault on a public official, and insult, and sentenced to 21 months and 10 days of probation.

The following day, Maguire's legal team appealed the verdict. Later, under Greek law, the appeals court overturned the original verdict, meaning his case will undergo a full retrial.

The retrial was postponed four times between 2023 and 2025, finally resuming on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, on the island of Syros.

Throughout the proceedings, Maguire, through his lawyers, has consistently denied any wrongdoing and plans to appeal to the Supreme Court.

He has also rejected several opportunities for out-of-court settlements and is determined to clear his name through legal means.

It is worth mentioning that because Greek law allows defendants in such cases to be represented by lawyers without having to appear in court, Maguire did not appear in person.

In this retrial, the judge found Maguire guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery. Given the relatively minor nature of the offenses, Maguire's sentence was reduced to 15 months.

Outside of the legal proceedings, Maguire, who was initially scheduled to miss Manchester United's shock 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United due to illness, ultimately started the match despite his illness.

Since interim manager Michael Carrick took over, Maguire's recent performances have shown significant improvement.

Before this shock defeat to the Magpies, the Premier League giants had enjoyed an 11-game unbeaten run, surging up to third place, a feat largely attributed to Maguire's contribution.

The preliminary squad list for the England national team at the 2026 World Cup will be announced in two weeks.

It is believed that the former Manchester United captain will almost certainly be among those listed in national team head coach Thomas Tuchel's squad.
