According to ESPN's Shams Charania on Thursday, the US men's basketball team plans to replace Steve Kerr with Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat as head coach.
Spoelstra won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics as the chief assistant coach of the US men's basketball team. He is expected to lead the team to the 2027 Qatar Men's Basketball World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Charania further noted that the head coaching change was made by USA Basketball General Manager Grant Hill, demonstrating the effectiveness of Hill's internal succession plan: after Steve Kerr replaced Gregg Popovich, Spoelstra will follow the same model as the head coach.
Associated Press reporter Tim Reynolds added that Spoelstra and USA Basketball have not yet officially signed an agreement. The appointment is expected to be announced after the American Basketball Association (ABA) board meeting is scheduled for later this month.
Spoelstra, 54, has coached the Miami Heat since 2008 and currently holds the longest tenure among active head coaches in the league. He has won 787 regular season games in 17 seasons as head coach of the Heat and has led the team to two NBA championships (2013 and 2021).
