AC Milan coach Conceicao officially sacked, Allegri's return is imminent

AC Milan issued an official announcement on Thursday, announcing that 50-year-old Sergio Conceicao will no longer serve as first-team coach.

The announcement read: "AC Milan and Sergio Conceicao will not continue to cooperate next season. The club would like to thank Sergio and his coaching team for their commitment, professionalism and dedication in coaching the first team in the past few months. The AC Milan family bids farewell to the coach who led the team to win the 50th championship trophy in the club's history and wishes him all the best in the future."

Conceicao is a representative of Portugal's "Golden Generation". He played in Serie A with Lazio, Parma and Inter Milan during his playing career. He retired in October 2009 and later served as technical director at PAOK.

In January 2012, Conceição started his coaching career at Olhão. He then moved to Coimbra University, Braga Sporting, Guimarães, Nantes and Porto as head coach, during which time he led Porto to win three Portuguese Super League titles, four Portuguese Cup titles, one Portuguese League Cup title and three Portuguese Super Cup titles.

In December 2024, Conceicao succeeded Paulo Fonseca as AC Milan coach. He led the team to win the Italian Super Cup shortly after taking office, but then failed to perform as expected in multiple battles. At the end of the season, AC Milan ranked eighth in the Serie A standings and was eliminated in the knockout play-offs of the Champions League. Although they successfully entered the Italian Cup final, they eventually lost to Bologna and finished second.

Conceicao's term at Milan was originally scheduled to last until June 2026. However, AC Milan exercised the option in the contract that allowed it to unilaterally terminate the cooperation at the end of this season, resulting in Conceicao's early departure.

AC Milan has now decided on Conceicao's successor. According to Fabrizio Romano, the 57-year-old Massimiliano Allegri is about to return to Milan to start his second term in the Rossoneri.
