Aaron Turner recently reiterated that Jonathan Kuminga's contract extension is conditional on the Golden State Warriors converting the team option in his contract into a player option.
The news was first reported by Warriors media outlet The Warriors Talk. According to The Warriors Talk, Kuminga's agent, Aaron Turner, stated in an interview that if the two sides cannot reach an agreement, Kuminga may choose to accept a one-year, $7.9 million qualifying offer. He also noted that such a move would undoubtedly negatively impact Kuminga's long-term relationship with the Warriors.
"Treat him fairly," Turner said bluntly. "If you're only concerned about the present, make him a qualifying offer; if you want to control the future, raise the offer and include a player option." Turner also noted that Kuminga is willing to reconsider his two-year, $45 million extension, provided the second year is a player option. He emphasized that after four years of ups and downs, Kuminga believes he deserves control over his next contract.
According to reports by Shams Charania and Anthony Slater, the Warriors recently raised their contract extension offer from two years, $45 million, to three years, $72.5 million, with the third year remaining a team option. Kuminga's team countered with another proposal: Kuminga would sign immediately if the Warriors converted the team option in his contract to a player option.
The Warriors' refusal to accept the proposal has stalled contract extension talks between the two sides, severely impacting the Warriors' team-building plans. In recent weeks, they have been in contact with several players, including Al Horford, De'Anthony Melton, Seth Curry, and Gary Payton II, but all potential signings have been put on hold due to Kuminga's contract issues.
