Barcelona announced on its official website on Tuesday that Spain international midfielder wonderkid Gavi had successfully undergone surgery on his right knee meniscus and is expected to miss four to five months to recover.
According to Barcelona's official statement, team doctors performed scans on Gavi's injury on Monday and performed an arthroscopic procedure, a minimally invasive procedure that uses a camera to diagnose and treat joint problems, to ensure the Spanish international, who has been sidelined since August, can recover and return to action as soon as possible.
Before Gavi's surgery, his exact return date was unknown, but early indications indicated that the club had expected him to be out for only about a month.
The following day, however, Barça explained that the surgery was intended to "preserve" the meniscus, which would result in a long-term absence for Gavi, potentially keeping him sidelined until the end of February 2026.
This unfortune news will be a significant blow for Gavi, as the 2026 FIFA World Cup in United States, Canada and Mexico is scheduled to be held next year.
Gavi must perform exceptionally well upon his return from injury and avoid a recurrence of his previous injury to be considered for a final call-up to Luis de la Fuente's Spain national team squad.
Gavi suffered an injury during a training session in late August, sidelining him since the match against Rayo Vallecano and missing Spain's matches this month.
Notably, this is the midfield wonderkid's third major injury setback in recent years. Between November 2023 and October 2024, Gavi also missed 11 months due to a ruptured right knee cruciate ligament (ACL).
