Bulls officially announce Derrick Rose's No. 1 jersey will be retired

On August 25 , the Chicago Bulls officially announced that they would hold a jersey retirement ceremony for Derrick Rose on January 24, 2026. By then, the former MVP's No. 1 jersey will be hung high in the United Center, standing shoulder to shoulder with legends such as Jordan, Pippen, Sloan and Love.

Rose, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, quickly became a franchise icon upon joining the Chicago Bulls. He won Rookie of the Year in his rookie season and was selected to three consecutive All-Star teams. In the 2010-11 season, he averaged 25 points and 7.7 assists per game, leading the Bulls to a league-best 62-20 record. At the age of 22, he became the youngest regular-season MVP in NBA history. From that moment on, he was considered the future of Chicago basketball.

A serious injury in the 2012 playoffs derailed Rose's path to the top, and he spent the next few years battling injuries and comebacks. Despite this, he persevered and returned to the court, scoring 50 points against the Timberwolves in 2018, a moment that became an NBA classic. He continued to demonstrate his value with the Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks, even winning MVP honors again in the 2020-21 season.

Throughout his career, Rose played for the Chicago Bulls, Knicks, Cavaliers, Timberwolves, Pistons, and Grizzlies, appearing in 723 regular-season games and averaging 17.4 points and 5.2 assists per game. Before his serious injury, he averaged over 21 points per game, and even after the injury, he maintained a steady output of around 15 points, demonstrating his perseverance and resilience.

In just a few years, Rose reached the NBA's highest stage and realized his dream. Now, the Bulls are retiring his jersey, which is not only a recognition of his achievements, but also a tribute to his basketball spirit.
