The Dallas Mavericks announced that center Dereck Lively II will undergo season-ending surgery for a right foot injury, but is expected to recover before the start of training camp next season.
The 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 draft only played 7 games this season. The persistent swelling and soreness in his right foot prevented him from returning to the rotation, and he eventually decided to undergo surgery.
The 21-year-old Lifeley showed impressive potential in his rookie year, helping his team reach the NBA Finals last season. He performed consistently in 21 playoff games, averaging 7.9 points (67.4% field goal percentage), 7.4 rebounds, and 1 block per game. When he was on the court, the Mavericks had a net rating of +9.1 per 100 possessions, demonstrating his defensive presence and efficiency.
However, injuries have consistently plagued the young center. Last season, Lively only played 36 games due to a stress fracture in his foot, and with this season's absence, he will only have played 43 games in the past two years.
Despite this, the Mavericks' management remains highly confident in his future. The team's co-general manager stated in a press release, "Derrick has demonstrated professionalism and resilience in the face of this season's challenges. While this has been a setback, we remain confident in his long-term future and will fully support his recovery."
The Mavericks have also been hit by another serious injury this season: guard Kyrie Irving tore his ACL in March, and his return date for this season remains uncertain. The team acquired Anthony Davis in February, intending to form a twin-tower lineup with Loveley, but the two have only played together for a total of 79 minutes over the past two seasons.
The Mavericks currently have a record of 9 wins and 16 losses, ranking 11th in the Western Conference. The team hopes to maintain its competitiveness while also allowing Lifeley to fully recover and lay the foundation for the future.
