The Athletic's resident renowned English transfer journalist David Ornstein, exclusively reported on Friday that Tottenham Hotspur interim manager Igor Tudor could be sacked if the team fails to beat Liverpool in this weekend's Premier League match.
According to Ornstein, journalists have been hearing for several days that Tudor is on the verge of being sacked, with some even surprised that he was still the manager at the pre-match press conference.
He said, since taking over, the club's performances has remained exceptionally poor, most recently suffering a humiliating 5-2 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League after substitute goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky conceded four goals in 17 minutes. This meant that Tudor's job was already in jeopardy.
With the club's relegation looming, Tottenham Hotspur's management has realized that another managerial change may be necessary to save the club.
However, the Spurs management is currently facing serious problems in finding Igor Tudor's successor.
Spurs' management hopes to appoint former Brighton and Marseille head coach Roberto de Zerbi to replace Tudor, but the Italian coach currently shows no interest in taking over.
Another man considered an ideal target by the management is former head coach Mauricio Pochettino. However, the Argentine coach is focused on helping the US national team prepare for this summer's World Cup, so Spurs may not be able to approch Pochettino until after the world's most prestigious international football tournament ends.
Former Liverpool legendary manager Jürgen Klopp has stated that he has no intention of coaching again in the near future and will never manage a Premier League club outside of Liverpool. Therefore, the coach, currently the Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull, is also unlikely to become Spurs' new manager.
Ange Postecoglou, another former manager, has fallen out with the management and is unlikely to be considered as a potential successor.
On the other hand, Ornstein added that despite the rampant rumours online, Liverpool currently has no intention of parting ways with head coach Arne Slot, who has been met with equally strong calls to be sacked.
Rumours circulating online which claimed that former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is close to becoming the new manager of Liverpool or Spurs are untrue.
Spurs have suffered a month-long winless streak since February 2nd, including a six-game losing streak across all competitions, leaving them in 16th place with 29 points, just one point above the relegation zone.
To make matters worse, the team is plagued by a severe injury crisis, making it difficult for the demoralized players to regain their former form.
If they cannot defeat Liverpool, Spurs' hopes of avoiding relegation will become increasingly slim.
If relegated, Spurs will become only the second major club in Premier League history, after Newcastle United, to be relegated.
