Marseille's defeat to Liverpool: De Zerbi: Willpower alone is not enough.

Marseille suffered a 0-3 defeat at home to Premier League giants Liverpool in a crucial Champions League match of the seventh round, after conceding goals in both halves. Manager Alex de Zerbi stated that his team could have performed better, but added that willpower alone was not enough to win a tough game.

During the match, Liverpool won a free kick in first-half stoppage time, and Szoboszlai converted the penalty to give Liverpool a 1-0 lead.

In the 72nd minute of the second half, Frimpong made a cross, and Marseille goalkeeper Gironimo Rulli inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net while attempting to block it, extending Liverpool's lead to 2-0.

In the final stages of the match, Hrafinbeh assisted Gakopo to score. Ultimately, Marseille lost 3-0 at home to Liverpool, managed by Sloth. After two wins and three losses in their last five matches, Marseille currently sits in 19th place in the standings with 9 points.

It's worth noting that Marseille previously defeated Angers 5-2 at home in Ligue 1, but failed to maintain their winning streak against Liverpool.

Marseille manager De Zerbi said, "When you're sitting on the bench, you have no idea whether the game will play like it did against Nantes or like it did against Angers. We could have performed better, but we didn't. And the hardest part is to play like we did against Angers in 10 consecutive games."

“It’s a pity we couldn’t do it, and that’s the hardest thing to accept. We had the attitude, but when facing an opponent like Liverpool, willpower alone isn’t enough; we have to truly understand football. I think they made almost no mistakes in passing. We knew they would be stronger, but we could have played better.”

Furthermore, Marseille will travel to Club Brugge for the next round of the Champions League, and only by winning 3 points can they participate in the play-offs to continue their Champions League journey.

De Zerbi continued, "Was there pressure in the last game against Club Brugge? There is always pressure here, but the key question is to play better."

“We don’t go to Marseille to just get a draw; we’ll try to perform like we did against Paris Saint-Germain or Angers. But if you don’t want to be under pressure, you shouldn’t come to Marseille.”
