Farhad Moshiri hopes new stadium will close gap between Everton and top teams

Former Everton boss Farhad Moshiri has revealed he is investing £400million into the club's new stadium and hopes the investment will help the club "close the gap to the top teams".

Everton will play their last competitive match at Goodison Park on Sunday before moving to their new stadium at Bramleymoor Dock next season.

Moshiri sold his stake to the Friedkin Group last year, ending an eight-year reign that was marred by controversy, but the construction of the new stadium is undoubtedly a positive and tangible legacy.

The British-Iranian businessman told Sky Sports News: "We all love Goodison, myself included. No one really wants to move away from there."

"But we had to relocate partly because of infrastructure issues and partly because of financial considerations."

"I personally invested £400 million and the rest came from other investors."

The new stadium, which cost around £750 million to build and can accommodate 52,888 spectators, has already hosted two test events with limited capacity, with a third test event set to take place this summer.

Moshiri believes that this new stadium can bring about a change in the team's plight of wandering in the lower reaches of the Premier League for many years: "With such an excellent new owner as the Friedkin Group, coupled with the completion of the new stadium, I think this is our best chance to really catch up."

"Our fans have suffered for too long."

During Moshiri's tenure, Everton fell into financial crisis, poor performance and frequent changes of coaches. He admitted: "My biggest regret is that I didn't come to watch more games. I would have liked to come more often, but my work restricted me. Despite this, I have no regrets."
