In a recent interview, Scottish midfield maestro John McGinn admitted that a knee injury he suffered two months ago had made him extremely worried that he would miss the upcoming 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Ten years ago, McGinn made his debut for Scotland; ten years later, he is a veteran with 84 appearances for the national team. However, just when he was one step away from realizing his dream of playing in the World Cup, injuries nearly destroyed everything.
In mid-January this year, during Aston Villa's match against Everton, 31-year-old McGinn was injured and forced to leave the field early in the game while blocking a pass. Recalling the incident, McGinn still feels lingering fear: "I immediately felt something was wrong."
"Although I was able to walk off the field, I know that many players who had suffered serious injuries were able to walk off on their own. I was really terrified, extremely afraid that my World Cup dream would be shattered."
Fortunately, subsequent scans revealed only a minor knee injury, but he still needed to undergo the first major surgery of his career. Initially, McGinn held onto a sliver of hope that he could tough it out without surgery, as it came at a crucial time for Aston Villa in their quest for Champions League qualification.
“I tried to grit my teeth and persevere, but my knee was swelling more and more and the fluid buildup was increasing. I quickly realized that surgery was inevitable,” McGinn said helplessly. “I’m 31 years old and I can’t gamble with my body anymore.”
Ultimately, despite a surgery that was initially expected to require six to eight weeks of recovery, McGinn miraculously returned to the field within six weeks thanks to his tenacious willpower and proactive rehabilitation. This not only gave Aston Villa a much-needed boost in their Champions League qualification race but also preserved his hopes of representing Scotland in the Americas.
