Former Fortuna Düsseldorf coach Thione has officially taken over as manager of Werder Bremen, having previously led the team to the German Cup semi-finals.

Werder Bremen officially announced on Wednesday the appointment of 51-year-old Daniele Tione as first-team manager. He will take over from Horst Steffen, and his specific term of office has not yet been disclosed.

Tione initially held various positions at Rocco de Germany Allen, Rocco de Germany Erfurt, and Osnabrück, including assistant coach, scout, and youth coach, before taking charge of the first team independently in 2017. He previously served as head coach of Osnabrück, Hamburg, and Fortuna Düsseldorf, and is widely regarded as an outstanding representative of Germany's young coaching generation.

According to Transfermarkt data, Thione has managed a total of 334 club matches, with 139 wins, 91 draws, and 104 losses. His most notable achievement is undoubtedly leading Fortuna Düsseldorf to the semi-finals of the German Cup in the 2023/24 season.

Thione's appointment at Werder Bremen marks his return to the coaching reins after a four-month hiatus. He was sacked by Fortuna Düsseldorf in October 2025 and had been unemployed since.

Regarding Thione's arrival, Werder Bremen's general manager, Clemens Fritz, commented: "Our meeting with Daniel went very well. His understanding of football, his personal charisma, and his approach to our current competitive situation were key factors in our decision. We believe that we will be able to turn things around under his leadership."

Tione stated, "I am very much looking forward to working with the team and I believe we can achieve success together and realize the club's goals. After productive talks with the club's management, I quickly decided to join Werder Bremen."

For Tione, his primary task upon taking office is to lead Werder Bremen out of its current predicament as soon as possible. Werder Bremen currently sits in 15th place in the Bundesliga with a record of 4 wins, 7 draws, and 9 losses, accumulating 19 points, just 5 points above the relegation zone.
