Arminia Bielefeld shocked Werder Bremen by defeating them with a late 1-0 win in the first round of the 2025/26 DFB-Pokal at the Schüco Arena on Friday.

In the first half, Agu spurned a good chance as his close-range shot flew high out of the pitch. In the second half, Bittencourt was sent off for lunging in with diving tackles on two of his opponents' players, and Kania's long-range shot went just slightly over the crossbar. In the crucial moment, Young slotted the ball into the net. In the end, Bielefeld shockingly defeated Werder Bremen with a late 1-0 win. It's worth noting that this is the second consecutive season Werder Bremen has been upset by last season's finalists!

First Half

In the 14th minute, Justin Njinmah made a straight pass the ball from the left side of the box. Marco Grüll quickly followed up, got the ball and took a few steps before shot from taking a left-footed volley from a difficult angle at the left side of the box, but his shot went wide slightly wide of the right side of the post.

Thereafter, neither team had notable attacks. At the end of the first half, Bielefeld and Werder Bremen were entered the halftime break being goalless.

Second Half

Both teams switched sides as the match continued. In the 54th minute, Leonardo Bittencourt received a red card for two consecutive, recekless flying tackles on Sam Schreck and Marvin Melham within two minutes! Werder Bremen was forced to finish the game with 10-men!

In the fourth minute of injury time, Bielefeld launched a deadly counterattack. Benjamin Boakye passes horizontally from the right wing. After stopping the ball, Isaiah Young pushed the ball into the bottom right corner of the empty net with his right-foot against the outrushing Zetterer from the left side of the box! Bielefeld secured the victory at 1-0!

When the final whistle is blown, Arminia Bielefeld defeated Werder Bremen with a shock late 1-0 win. The 2. Bundesliga club continued its proud record of not being eliminated in the first round of the DFB-Pokal since 2010.
