Fran Kirby announces retirement from England national team, ending a brilliant decade

England women's football star Fran Kirby has officially announced her retirement from the national team, ending her decade-long international journey.

The 31-year-old Kirby played 77 games for England, scored 19 goals, represented the national team in four major competitions, and was an important member of the golden age of England women's football.

Kirby made her international debut in 2014 and scored a goal in her debut match, helping England beat Sweden 4-0. Since then, Kirby has participated in the 2015 Women's World Cup (third place), the 2017 European Championship (fourth place), the 2019 Women's World Cup (fourth place) and the 2022 European Championship.

Kirby won the European Cup with the team at Wembley Stadium, becoming one of the witnesses and creators of the historic moment of England women's football. Kirby also represented England in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, demonstrating the comprehensive qualities and leadership of an international player.

In a retirement statement posted on social media, Kirby looked back on this journey with deep emotion: "I have worn the England jersey since I was 21 years old, and now it is time to put an end to this chapter. I never hoped that this day would come, but I am extremely proud to have had it all."

"Every time I'm called up to the national team, I'm grateful, I accept my role and give 100 per cent for the team. I just want to see England win."

Kirby also thanked the fans for their support along the way: "I will never forget hearing you shouting my name in the stadium. At that time, I was just a player in the WSL 2 league, but I was fortunate to participate in the history-changing 2015 World Cup and won the bronze medal for England, creating unforgettable memories for a lifetime."

As the girl from Reading officially bids farewell to the international stage, England women's football has lost an important icon. However, Kirby 's spirit, memory and example will continue to inspire the next generation.
