On August 3rd, amidst the sweltering summer heat of the NBA offseason, the New York Knicks' coaching staff continues to steadily progress. According to ESPN, the Knicks are considering hiring 55-year-old Chris Gent as the team's offensive coordinator, a position he is considered a leading candidate for. This move is a significant step in the team's efforts to complete the coaching staff for head coach Mike Brown.

Jent recently led a young Charlotte Hornets team to a championship in Summer League, adding to his impressive resume. A former NBA player, he briefly played for the Knicks in 1997, contributing six points in three games. Even more coincidentally, Jent was also a member of the Houston Rockets' 1994 championship team, defeating the Knicks in the Finals and winning the NBA championship trophy.

Since his professional playing career ended, Jant has been active in NBA coaching since 2003 and currently serves as an assistant coach to Charlotte Hornets head coach Charles Lee. He has extensive coaching experience, having served as a head coach twice, including coaching the Bakersfield Jam in the NBA Development League during the 2015-16 season and serving as acting head coach for 18 games with the Orlando Magic.

Jent is best known in the league for his work with LeBron James. He served as James's shooting coach during his early years with the Cleveland Cavaliers, helping him hone his offensive skills. From 2022 to 2024 , he and James reunited with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he oversaw James's coronation as the NBA's all-time scoring champion.

The Knicks, currently under Brown's leadership, are integrating new players with the coaching staff from the era of former head coach Tom Thibodeau. Once Jant joins, he will play a key role on the offensive end, injecting more creativity and execution into the team in the new season.
