England goalkeeper James Trafford has returned to Manchester City, signing a five-year contract until June 2030.
It marks an emotional homecoming for Trafford, who spent eight years in City's youth system and is now returning to where his dream began.
Trafford has experienced rapid growth at Burnley since leaving the club in 2023. In two seasons, he has gradually established himself as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in Europe.
Trafford impressed in his Premier League debut, and although the team was relegated to the Championship that season, his individual performances were highly regarded. Under new manager Scott Parker, Trafford continued to shine, becoming a key figure in Burnley's rapid return to the Premier League.
In the 2024-25 season, Trafford played 45 games in the Championship League and completed an astonishing 29 clean sheets, tying the single-season clean sheet record in English football history, and conceded only 16 goals throughout the season.
Now that he has returned to Manchester City, Trafford can't hide his excitement. He said: "Being able to return to Manchester City is an extremely special and proud moment for me and my family. I have dreamed of wearing this jersey again one day since I was a child."
"Manchester City is my home. Not only do we have top coaches and players here, but we also have an indescribable sense of belonging. It is an honor and a challenge to play alongside world-class players under Guardiola."
“I’m still young and eager to learn and grow, and I believe there’s no better place for me to hone my skills than at Manchester City. I can’t wait to get on the pitch, play for the passionate Manchester City fans, and do my best to help the team achieve more glory.”
