Bayer Leverkusen officially announced on Monday that Erik ten Hag will no longer serve as head coach from now on.
Ten Hag, 55, has won three Eredivisie titles, two Dutch Cups, and one Dutch Super Cup with Ajax, as well as one FA Cup and one League Cup with Manchester United. He officially took over as manager of Leverkusen on July 1, but has struggled to get off to an ideal start: Leverkusen has only earned one point against Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen, and currently sits 12th in the Bundesliga standings.
Although Ten Hag stressed that the team still needs more time to integrate the new lineup, the club's top management has long lost patience with the status quo. Regarding the decision to fire Ten Hag, Leverkusen's sporting director Simon Rolfes explained: "This decision was not easy for us. No one wants to take this step. However, the past few weeks have proven that it is not feasible to build a new and successful team with the current lineup."
"We remain confident in the quality of the team and will do everything we can to move the team forward under the new structure."
Leverkusen CEO Fernando Caro added: "It is undoubtedly sad to part ways at the start of the season, but we believe it is necessary. We remain committed to achieving our goals for this season - and to do that we need to create the best conditions for the first team at all levels. The priority now is to fully implement and make the most of these conditions once again."
As for Ten Hag's successor, it is still unknown. According to Leverkusen's arrangement, the first team's training affairs will be temporarily taken over by the coaching staff.
